3 Things You Should Do When You Store Your Furniture And Precious Items

Putting things in a self storage unit can be stressful. This is because if you don't do it right you could easily ruin your things. Luckily, if you follow the right rules of storage you should be able to easily store your items, it is just a matter of taking extra precautions to ensure that your items are properly packages and prepped. Here are some things you should do before you store your furniture and precious items.

1. Polish The Surfaces

For most items such as wood furniture, leather, and even pianos you should always polish the surfaces before you store them. The polish will help to create a protective layer between the surface of the furniture and the outer elements. For instance, any wood, such as a piano or wood furniture, will absorb any moisture and it could ruin the wood. The polish will help to protect the wood from absorbing anything, and will keep it looking nice throughout time.

Leather similarly will crack if you don't polish it before hand. This is why you should always polish any and all surfaces that could be polished before you store them long term.

2. Get a Climate Controlled Unit

Second you should always get a climate-controlled unit, especially if you live in an area where you experience all 4 seasons. This is because as the temperature and humidity changes it will be terrible on your furniture and items. As the moisture in the air changes it will cause your items to expand and to shrink. This is what causes the damage in the wood items, and the breaking in your leather items. In addition, things like musical instruments are especially sensitive to temperature changes, which is why it is best if you can get a unit that keeps the temperature and humidity constant.

3. Drape Furniture Lightly With A Sheet

Another important feature is to make sure that the all of the furniture and sensitive items are draped with a sheet. Some people think that it would be better to plastic wrap them. This can be dangerous; if you don't wrap them properly you could make it so that no oxygen or air passes through, which can damage the furniture. You still need them to be covered so they are protected, but they should only be lightly covered. This is why a sheet or piece of fabric is the best way to do it.

These are just three things that you should do to make sure that your furniture and precious items are protected while you store them.
